A/B test alternative

A/B test before launch: the alternative when traffic isn’t enough

The main alternatives to an A/B test are buyer simulation with personas, session recordings, moderated user tests, expert audits, analytics analysis and adaptive tests. Which one fits depends on your traffic and on whether you need to know what wins or why.

99takes runs in Claude: personas from your audience show which version holds before you go live, without traffic. Every persona is researched from public customer voices, with quote and source. It does not replace an A/B test with real traffic. The live test comes after.

How long will your A/B test run?
Visitors per week
Smallest difference the test should detect
28 weeks until the test reliably detects 3.6% instead of 3%. 27,792 visitors in total.

The difference
between "That's nice"
and "Where do I sign?"

An A/B test tells you which page won. It does not tell you which objection stopped the readers of the other one. 99takes names those objections per persona, before you go live.

"That's nice"

The reader hesitates

"Interesting features, but I don't see how this would work for us."

Objection: Too abstract, no use case

"Looks professional, but where does our data end up?"

Objection: No answer on data protection

"No price at all. Do I really have to talk to sales first?"

Objection: Too many hurdles before the next step
Next step

Would leave to compare other providers

"Where do I sign?"

The reader acts

"That is exactly our use case, and they show what it saves."

Concrete use case

"Data protection is answered right next to the form. That settles it for me."

Proof where the doubt comes up

"The price is on the page and I can try it first. I'll book a demo."

Hurdles removed, clear next step
Next step

Would request a demo

THE PROBLEM

When a classic A/B test does not fit a B2B landing page

An A/B test measures which version wins with real visitors. That is its strength. It also has limits worth checking before you start one.

It runs until the sample is reached

A test has to run until it reaches the sample size you planned. Stop it earlier and the winner can be chance. With few conversions a week, that can take a long time.

It needs traffic you may not have

How many visitors you need depends on your conversion rate and on the smallest difference you want to detect. Work it out with a sample size calculator before you plan the test.

It shows no "why"

An A/B test tells you that version B won. It does not tell you why most visitors of both versions still left, or what to try next.

Our suggestion: find the reasons first, then test the version that has the fewest obvious objections.

A/B test vs. buyer simulation

The A/B test measures with real visitors once the page is live. The simulation gives you reasons before that, without a single visitor.

AFTER LAUNCH

Classic A/B test

Measures what wins with real visitors

Runs until the sample is reached

The length depends on your traffic and conversions

Needs live traffic

Both versions have to be online and get visitors

No "why"

"Version B wins", but not why visitors still leave

Real numbers, but only after launch and without reasons

THE ALTERNATIVES

7 alternatives to A/B tests for landing page optimization

  1. 1
    OUR TOOL

    Buyer simulation with personas

Personas from your audience read your page or two versions of your copy. Each gives a score and says why: where it gets stuck, what is missing, whether it would take the next step. No real traffic needed.

With 99takes in Claude you can analyze a landing page: copy, structure, and how the design comes across on desktop and mobile. You can test a new version against the current one, compare headlines, ads or first screens, and check which of your claims competitors make too. If you want a new version, 99takes writes a challenger and you see it before it is tested.

    WhereIn Claude
    Traffic neededNone
    ResultScore and reasons

    A good fit for:

    • B2B pages with little traffic
    • New landing pages before launch
    • Offers that need explaining
    • Choosing which version to test live

    Limits:

What personas say is simulated, not measured in the market. Once the page is live, report which version won. That builds the hit rate per jury, which is published only once there are ten decidable results, always with their number and a range.

  2. 2

    Session recordings and heatmaps

Recording tools show how real visitors use your page: clicks, scrolling and where they stop.

    Advantages

    • Real behavior of real visitors
    • Shows usability problems
    • Runs in the background on the live page

    Limits

    • Shows what happens, not why
    • Needs visitors on the live page
    • Watching and sorting recordings takes time
Hotjar, Clarity and Mouseflow compared →
  3. 3

    Moderated user tests

You invite people from your audience to use the page while you watch and ask questions.

    Advantages

    • Reasons straight from real people
    • Surfaces problems nobody expected
    • Follow-up questions are possible

    Limits

    • Recruiting the right participants takes effort
    • Each session costs time and incentives
    • Few participants per round
  4. 4

    Expert conversion audits

A CRO specialist or agency reviews your page against their experience and best practices.

    Advantages

    • Experienced eyes on the page
    • Fast first assessment
    • Concrete recommendations

    Limits

    • Based on judgement, not on your buyers
    • Quality depends on the person
    • Usually a project fee
  5. 5

    Analytics analysis

Segments, funnels and events in your analytics show where visitors drop off on the way to conversion.

    Advantages

    • Numbers on real drop-off points
    • Insights per segment and channel
    • Uses the setup you already have

    Limits

    • No explanation for why
    • Needs a clean tracking setup
    • Looks back, not ahead
  6. 6

    Multivariate testing (MVT)

Several elements change at once and every combination gets its own share of traffic.

    Advantages

    • Tests several elements together
    • Shows interactions between elements
    • Useful on pages with a lot of traffic

    Limits

    • Needs more traffic than an A/B test, because visitors are split across more combinations
    • Complex to set up and analyze
    • Usually runs longer than an A/B test
  7. 7

    Multi-armed bandit testing

An adaptive test sends more traffic to the stronger variant while it is still running.

    Advantages

    • Less traffic goes to the weaker variant
    • Useful for short campaigns
    • Adjusts automatically

    Limits

    • Needs a tool that supports it
    • Still needs real traffic
    • Shows what wins without reasons
DECISION GUIDE

A/B test alternatives compared: time, traffic and insight

What each method needs and what it tells you. Duration and cost depend on your setup, so the table compares them in words.

How much traffic an A/B test needs: a worked example

The number of visitors depends on two things: your current conversion rate and the smallest difference the test should still detect reliably. The smaller the difference, the more visitors you need. The table assumes a conversion rate of 3%.

New version Visitors per version Total Weeks at 1,000 visitors at 5,000
3.3% instead of 3% (+10%) 53,148 106,296 106 21
3.6% instead of 3% (+20%) 13,896 27,792 28 5.6
3.9% instead of 3% (+30%) 6,445 12,890 13 2.6
4.5% instead of 3% (+50%) 2,512 5,024 5 about 1

Calculated for a two-sided test with a 5% significance level and 80% power, using the standard formula for two proportions (Kim 2016, retrieved October 11, 2026). Example for the second row: (1.96 + 0.84)² × (0.03 × 0.97 + 0.036 × 0.964) / 0.006² ≈ 13,896 per version. Weeks means all visitors to the page, split evenly between both versions. Online sample size calculators sometimes use other formulas and land on slightly different numbers.

What follows: with 1,000 visitors a week, a test only finds large differences in a time you can wait for. You do not know before the test how big the difference of your new version is. That is why it pays to drop the weaker versions first, so your limited traffic only has to check the strongest one.

Why every persona reads differently

A head of purchasing reads the same copy differently when she is choosing a vendor than when she has to justify a renewal. You see, per persona, where they get stuck.

Frequently asked questions about A/B test alternatives

What is the best alternative to an A/B test?

It depends on what you need to know. If you have little traffic or want to understand why visitors hesitate, a buyer simulation or a moderated user test fits. If you need proof with real visitors, the A/B test itself remains the right method.

When should I use an A/B test and when an alternative?

Use an A/B test when your page gets enough visitors and conversions to reach the sample size you planned. Check that with a sample size calculator before you start. Before launch, with little traffic, or when you need reasons, start with a qualitative method.

How much traffic does an A/B test need?

That depends on your current conversion rate, the smallest difference you want to detect, and the significance level and power you choose. An example: at a 3% conversion rate, a test needs about 13,900 visitors per version to detect a lift to 3.6%, and about 53,100 for 3.3% (two-sided, 5% significance, 80% power). At 1,000 visitors a week that is about 28 and 106 weeks. If the test would run longer than you can wait, check the versions with another method first.

Does a buyer simulation replace an A/B test?

No. A simulation says beforehand how personas from your audience read a page, what holds them back and which version they prefer. It is not a measurement in the market. Use it to choose the version worth testing live, then report the live result to see the hit rate per jury.

How does 99takes work?

You create an account at run.99takes.com and get 350 credits, without payment details. You connect Claude, build or pick an audience with 10 to 14 personas, and name a page or paste two versions. Each persona gives a score and an objection, right in the conversation.

What does 99takes cost?

Comparing two versions with 12 personas, each also reading under the others’ jobs, costs about 73 credits; 1:1, each persona only under its own job, about 19. 99takes names the price before every run. If you want us to do it, the study costs €990 net at a fixed price.

Can I combine several methods?

Yes. Check copy and page with a simulation before launch, so the live test starts with a version that has fewer obvious objections. Then measure with an A/B test once you have the traffic. Analytics and session recordings show alongside where real visitors drop off.
